WEIMA expands its drive portfolio with an all-electric high-torque system solution
Strong, smart, future-proof: WEIMA presented the new W5.22 single-shaft shredder at the K trade fair in 2025 with this slogan. The DST2 high-torque motor and the b maXX servo controller from Baumüller were once again on board. The drive system has already been used in another WEIMA shredder model and has been further developed for the new shredder series. The new generation features an innovative high-torque drive system from Baumüller and a customised gearbox/clutch combination from Nidec Desch.

For its new range of shredders, WEIMA was looking for drives that cover a wide performance spectrum and therefore decided in favour of a drive package from Baumüller for the new series. The powerful PowRex drive solution, consisting of DST2 high-torque motors and b maXX servo drives, is used together with the Tevox®, a gearbox/slip clutch combination from Nidec Desch, as the drive train in the new WEIMA shredder.

The manufacturer of shredding and compacting machines is expanding its drive portfolio with the innovative high-torque drive system, offering its customers greater flexibility in their choice of drive.
High throughput with simultaneous energy savings
With the new generation of drives, WEIMA is also setting new standards in terms of throughput and energy efficiency. The powerful W5.22 single-shaft shredder processes plastic, but also wood, paper or substitute fuels with a very high power density and therefore significantly less energy.
"The new drive is characterised by the fact that it only needs the high torque - and therefore more power - when it actually has to develop force," explains Kay Schulte, CSO at WEIMA. This allows for up to 30% greater energy efficiency compared to conventional drives.
Maximum torque from zero speed for faster restarting and freewheeling
High peak and rated torques are crucial requirements for modern shredder drives, which must also be reliably fulfilled when processing recycling materials. The high torque is particularly important in the shredding sector, as demanding materials often have to be shredded.
Baumüller high-torque motors achieve maximum torque from zero speed. This makes it easy to restart the machine when it is full, for example. The speed and torque can be precisely set via the b maXX servo drives, which enables controlled, high-torque starting and stopping. This can be used to reliably resolve a fault in shredders, for example in reversing mode, or to achieve faster free movement of the machine shaft. This ensures high throughput rates, maximum machine availability and therefore a significant increase in productivity.
Flexibility in connecting the drive to the rotor shaft
The connection between the DST2 motors from Baumüller and the Tevox from Nidec DESCH was standardised at the start of the system partnership to simplify matters. WEIMA can choose between three different flange connections for the interface between the drive train and rotor shaft. Depending on the machine model, the drive can therefore be integrated into the existing connection geometry without any design changes. This means that WEIMA remains completely flexible in terms of drive types and the end customer can choose between electromechanical, hydraulic and high-torque.
Baumüller x WEIMA: Driving innovation forward together
Baumüller and WEIMA have been working together successfully since 2017. For the new version of the W5 single-shaft shredder series, WEIMA has once again made a conscious decision in favour of a Baumüller drive. The world market leader for shredding and compacting machines has always been very satisfied with the performance and reliability of the shredders with Baumüller drives since the beginning of the co-operation. Baumüller also supplies everything from a single source.
