PowRex drive package: High-torque drive system for shredders

The increasing demands placed on modern recycling processes call for powerful and intelligent drive solutions. Drives for recycling systems form the basis of efficient systems – from shredder motors to customized drive concepts. Shredders with electric high-torque drives ensure maximum performance and impress with their high energy efficiency, minimal maintenance requirements and low operating costs.

Baumüller’s PowRex drive package, comprising DST2 high-torque motors and b maXX servo drives, forms the basis for the fully electric system solution with high-torque drive.

To provide the high power required for shredding processes, motors with very high maximum torques are needed, depending on the gear ratio. Furthermore, our drive facilitates a homogeneous shredding result thanks to its excellent speed stability.

Baumüller high-torque motors from the DST2 series are thus ideal for this application.

Thanks to the high-torque motor, maximum torque is available even at low speeds. This also allows the machine to start up when full, for example.

The water cooling system is standard on our DST2 high-torque motors. Active cooling increases the power density and allows for smaller component dimensions. The robust design and smooth, dirt-resistant, surface of the motor housing are also perfectly suited to the application.

b maXX servo drives: Dynamic and intelligent

For precise control of torque motors, Baumüller offers the b maXX 5000 converter family, which provides suitable servo drives for high performance classes. The powerful b maXX servo drives ensure high speed stability, enabling high throughput and a significant increase in productivity. The servo drives impress with their compact installation dimensions, and offer a broad and scalable selection of optional safety functions.

Liquid-cooled components for harsh environmental conditions

Fabric fibers, corrosive dust, and dirt particles can all lead to deposits on motors, converters, and control cabinets during recycling. Liquid cooling of the b maXX converters is also an option since our motors are already supplied with water cooling for such demanding environmental conditions. This minimizes the risk of contamination.

The components are kept at ideal operating temperature, facilitating consistent performance and long-term reliability.

The smart b maXX: Added value in the drive system

bmaxx external controls

Baumüller also offers software solutions for regulation, motion control and analysis that run directly on the drive. The technology functions are thus located directly in the b maXX servo controller.

This also applies, for example, to the integration of Baumüller converters in external control systems. We are completely flexible in respect of third-party field bus systems. Baumüller servo drives can be supplied with the option of easy connection to ProfiNet, for example. Connecting the drive system to a Siemens PLC is thus quite easy.

Document energy consumption without external hardware: Replacing a hydraulic drive in a shredder with a fully electric high-torque system saves the recycling system a lot of energy. External measuring devices are normally used to document energy consumption. Baumüller has moved energy measurement into the drive. The Smart Energy Monitoring software is installed directly on the b maXX servo controller. Energy consumption is thus recorded via the intelligent drive. This saves additional costs due to unnecessary external sensors and reduces wiring effort and the space required in the control cabinet on the machine.
