Smart system solution reduces operating costs

All-electric high-torque drive solution for shredders at IFAT 2026

May 4–7, 2026, the Baumüller Group will be showcasing an innovative high-torque drive system for shredders to recycling machine manufacturers and recycling companies at its booth in Hall B5, Stand 409.

Baumüller’s powerful PowRex drive package, comprising DST2 high-torque motors and b maXX servo drives, forms the basis for the fully electric system solution with high-torque drive. The high-performance servo drives and high-torque motors enable a high degree of power and dynamics while maintaining excellent energy efficiency.

Low operating costs – high machine availability

By way of the fully electric high-torque drive system, Baumüller has developed a forward-looking system solution that is powerful, low-maintenance and energy-efficient. High throughput and maximum machine availability lead to higher productivity. The resulting lower operating costs are significant advantages compared to hydraulic drives or drives with asynchronous motors according to the IEC standard, so-called standard motors. The in part higher acquisition cost of a high-torque drive thus pays its way within a very short time.

Eliminating the hydraulic drive offers many advantages for shredders with high-torque motors: The number of wear-and-tear parts is reduced because vulnerable components such as hydraulic hoses and hydraulic motors are no longer required. Regular oil changes are also no longer necessary. Compared to drives with asynchronous motors, no maintenance of belts or pulleys is required. If less maintenance-intensive components are used, maintenance intervals can also be minimized. Skilled personnel required for this are available for other tasks, and machine downtime is also significantly reduced.

The smart b maXX: Integration of Baumüller converters into third-party control systems

Baumüller also offers software solutions for regulation, motion control and analysis that run directly on the drive. The technology functions can thus be directly integrated in the b maXX servo controller. This also applies, for example, to the integration of Baumüller converters in external control systems. Basic motion control functions for Baumüller converters in third-party control systems are easily possible. Baumüller is completely flexible in respect of third-party field bus systems. Baumüller servo drives can be supplied with the option of easy connection to ProfiNet, for example. Connecting the drive system to a Siemens PLC is thus quite easy.

WEIMA: Single-shaft shredder with a complete drive solution

The PowRex drive system from BaumüllerCoordinated complete system: The PowRex drive system from Baumüller will be shown LIVE at IFAT 2026 together with a Tevox® direct drive from Nidec Desch on a W8.15 PowerLine at WEIMA

Last year, WEIMA already presented a W5 series shredding plant with a Baumüller high-torque drive at the international plastics trade fair K in Düsseldorf. Now, the shredder manufacturer is consistently continuing on this path. At IFAT 2026, a W8 series waste shredder with an electric high-torque drive will be exhibited for the first time at WEIMA in Hall B6, Stand 239.

Like the W5 shredder, the W8.15 PowerLine is equipped with Baumüller’s PowRex drive system and the Tevox®, a gearbox/slip clutch combination from Nidec Desch. In the PowRex/Tevox combination, Baumüller and the expert for customized gear and clutch technology, Nidec DESCH, combine their respective expertise. In close cooperation, Baumüller and Nidec DESCH offer a coordinated complete system consisting of a motor, servo drive, gearbox, and slip clutch. The advantage is a perfect and flexible connection between the rotor shaft and the power train – all from a single source.

The compact system solution achieves high torque even at low speeds. Thanks to the coordinated connection of the drive to the rotor shaft, power transmission is optimized, enabling higher drive performance. For recycling companies, this innovative drive system means economical operation, reduced machine downtimes, and more sustainable processing of valuable raw materials.

Modernization instead of replacement

A new shredding system need not necessarily be purchased to benefit from the energy efficiency of the highly dynamic high-torque drive system. If the mechanics are still in good working order, a shredder can also be brought up to date by upgrading the drive system. This typically comes at significantly lower costs – and often faster turnaround – than purchasing a new machine.
