Full steam ahead with innovative electrification solutions
At the SMM 2026, Baumüller will be showcasing intelligent propulsion and charging systems for electric and hybrid vessels
Baumüller is a supplier of intelligent propulsion and charging solutions for inland waterway vessels, ferries, workboats, research vessels, and yachts. September 1-4, 2026, at the SMM in Hamburg, in Hall A4, Stand 334, the marine experts will be demonstrating how electrified propulsion solutions can boost competitiveness and ensure ships are fit for the future.
The engineering expertise of the marine experts in hybrid and fully electric ship propulsion systems will also be demonstrated live at the stand using a games console. On the exhibit, different driving modes can be selected using a control lever. At the control panel, visitors can explore the dashboard of an electric ship and see how innovative energy sources and loads interact.
Electric drive systems from a single source – manufacturer-independent
Baumüller is not just a supplier, but a system partner for intelligent marine propulsion systems and charging infrastructure. Baumüller's system engineering experts work with partners to develop complete drive system solutions, equipping various types of ships with components manufactured in-house or sourced from the market. Shipyards, system integrators and shipowners benefit from the propulsion experts’ many years of experience and expertise, and do not, for example, have to concern themselves with selecting different battery banks or gensets.
For electric vessels with battery-powered electric motors and hybrid propulsion systems combining e-fuel generators and electric motors, Baumüller handles all aspects of engineering for propulsion and power generation. Baumüller’s comprehensive solution comprises electric motors, inverters, generators, scalable lithium-ion batteries with an energy management system, on-board power supply units, control cabinets, and drives for propellers and bow thrusters.
Baumüller is a system partner for the entire drive system: from control systems to power management
Charging infrastructure offering maximum flexibility: Baumüller offers bespoke solutions both in terms of system architecture (the figure shows a manual charging station) and power requirements
Charging systems for ships and ports: scalable charging technology and capacity
The hybridization and electrification of ships is also driving demand for high-performance charging infrastructure. This is where Baumüller demonstrates its flexibility when it comes to the various charging solutions. Depending on the type of vessel and its intended use, a bespoke system architecture for fast charging is offered. These range, among other things, from autonomous telescopic charging via a loading crane, to ram charging systems, through to manual charging stations.
Baumüller also offers flexibility when it comes to the power requirement of charging points and is not restricted to predefined standard values. This allows us to tailor our approach to each customer's specific needs and local conditions. The range extends from traditional AC charging stations to DC charging standards such as CCS2 or MCS, and even includes custom DC charging solutions with capacities of up to 6 MW.
Strong partnerships and closer local ties: the Baumüller marine network continues to grow
Innovation is enriched and accelerated by the external perspective provided by both partners in the components sector and local overseas representatives. In May 2026, Baumüller signed two further contracts with local partners for electrification solutions in the marine sector and has been a Danfoss Drives system integrator since 2025.
Through Oceanking S.A., Baumüller aims to expand its presence in the Greek market. The new representation, headquartered in Piraeus, will in future provide on-site support for the sale of propulsion systems for the shipbuilding industry. Baumüller has signed a project contract with Ranieri Tonissi S.p.a. for the marine sector in Italy and Slovenia. The Genoa (Italy)-based supplier of marine engines and equipment will support Baumüller in the electrification of ships and ports in these countries.
Since July 2025, Baumüller Anlagen-Systemtechnik has also been an authorized system integrator for Danfoss Drives and has therefore been admitted to the Integrator Excellence Program (IEP). The program is aimed at companies with extensive experience in the integration of electric drive systems, market knowledge and sector-specific expertise.
