On-board energy – intelligently controlled
At the SMM in Hamburg, Baumüller is showcasing intelligent power supply and control solutions for shipping
September 1-4, 2026, visitors to the SMM in Hamburg will have the opportunity to find out more about intelligent power supply and control systems for electric and hybrid ships at the Baumüller booth in Hall A4, Stand 334.
Intelligence in function and form: an energy distribution platform as a centralized or demineralised system
The maritime industry faces the challenge of efficiently connecting different energy suppliers and users – from conventional generators and methanol-powered gensets through to batteries and fuel cells.
This is precisely where Baumüller’s BAS-Link DC-Grid energy distribution platform comes in: the shared link enables different loads and energy sources to interact intelligently. Energy sources and loads can be directly connected via the central DC bus network—this reduces efficiency losses and increases the overall efficiency of the system. At the same time, the platform enables the easy integration of alternative energy sources, such as batteries and fuel cells. This creates a flexible and future-proof energy supply – both for the ship’s propulsion system and for the on-board electrical loads.
While the internal design impresses with its clever interplay of components, the control and DC cabinets stand out thanks to their modular system. The scalable architecture not only ensures a space-saving layout, but also good weight distribution in the ship. As the cabinets can be installed in any location, the power supply can also be tailored very specifically to the different types of vessel. This helps to save not only on costs but also on weight and space.

Self-adjusting and clear: energy management and visualization made by Baumüller
Hybrid vessels – such as those fitted with diesel generators and electric motors – are a successful combination that helps to improve environmental protection and reduce fuel consumption. An intelligent power management system increases the efficiency of the diesel-electric hybrid propulsion and further reduces energy consumption.
Once the single-line diagram for the ship's propulsion system has been approved and the hardware components have been optimally designed, Baumüller begins developing and integrating the automation system. This involves integrating not only the main propulsion systems but also all auxiliary units, such as bow thrusters and harbor generators, into an integrated propulsion concept. The BAS-PCS intelligent power management system, programmed by Baumüller, controls, among other things, the demand-based power output of the units within the drive system. The software adjusts the power supply—for example, through variable-speed generator sets—so that exactly the amount of power the ship currently needs is generated. This means that, for example, when traveling at a moderate cruising speed, the ship is powered by just one generator. If a faster journey is required or a maneuverer needs to be carried out, the second generator kicks in within seconds, fully automatically. The software controls when the second motor is switched on at such a speed that both motors do not need to be running continuously. The result is an intelligent system with self-adjusting energy management that ensures maximum efficiency, operational reliability and optimal energy use.
The software is suitable for different technologies, such as generators, batteries and fuel cells, as well as for various fuels such as methanol, e-fuels and diesel. BAS-PCS manages energy requirements for fossil fuels, e-fuels and combinations of the two.
The energy management system is delivered with a clear visualization interface. The current operating status of all drives is displayed in a clear, organized format as a dashboard on a monitor at the control panel. This means that the ship’s crew always have a clear overview of all energy sources and loads.
Saves energy and provides a clear overview: the BAS-PCS power management system, programmed by Baumüller, controls the drive system with a focus on efficiency. The uncluttered look of the user interface provides added certainty at the control panel
