Precise. Powerful. Highly efficient.

Baumüller relies on intelligent drive solutions for press manufacturers synchropress and Hürsan Pres

The choice of which drive system is most appropriate depends primarily on the product being manufactured on the machine. Baumüller supports its customers from the initial stages of component selection through to machine commissioning, thereby offering more than traditional drive manufacturers. Customer requirements—such as competitive advantages and future viability—are always at the center of our focus.

To continue giving its customers a clear competitive edge, synchropress faced the challenge of building on the strengths of its screw presses. “The machines needed to control the forming process precisely and deliver maximum forming force while keeping energy consumption as low as possible,” says Alfons Knust, sales representative at Baumüller, describing synchropress’s requirements. To meet these requirements, screw press manufacturer synchropress and drive system manufacturer Baumüller jointly developed an intelligent drive system. This drive system is now used in all synchropress presses with pressing forces ranging from 100 to 10,000 kN.

The synchropress® drive system consists of four threaded spindles, which are driven by highly dynamic DSD2 servo motors or powerful DST2 high-torque motors, depending on the required pressing force. The motors are mounted axially in the press table, in line with the spindle mounts. The integrated design of the motors ensures that the press is significantly more compact and requires less floor space. The b maXX 5100 active mains rectifier units and b maXX 5500 axis units provide highly synchronous motor control, ensuring the precision and repeatability required for the forming process.

At the heart of the drive system is a common DC link. It connects the b maXX 5100 active mains rectifier unit to the b maXX 5300 axis units or – for applications requiring higher motor power – to the high-performance b maXX 5500 units. It allows larger amounts of energy to be stored in the DC link capacitors. This buffers process-related power peaks, allowing the electrical connection to be sized for a significantly lower load. This reduces the connected load and the associated costs. The DC link connection also recovers braking energy from the forming process. The movement of a synchropress® ram not only draws energy but also generates braking energy during deceleration after the forming stroke. The DC link makes it possible to buffer – that is, temporarily store – the energy generated during each stroke and make it available for the next stroke. This reduces the press’s actual energy consumption.

Hürsan Pres: SERVO servo-hydraulic press with high pressing force combined with precise pressure and flow control

The specifications provided by the Turkish press manufacturer were clearly defined. The SERVO press, launched at the end of 2024, was to be designed to meet the growing demand for higher precision and lower energy consumption. The drive system should be more innovative, but everything else, including the machine control system, should remain with the existing suppliers. The press manufacturer was looking for a new drive solution and a partner with a powerful servo drive system and application expertise in metal forming. The result is a system from Baumüller with high pressing force combined with excellent energy efficiency and precise pressure and flow control – embedded in proven technology.

The servo-hydraulic drive solution consists of the dynamic DSD2 servo motor series, the b maXX 5500 servo converter, and the servo-hydraulic software module integrated in the inverter. Hürsan Pres has thus combined all the advantages of hydraulic presses, such as high pressing forces and flexibility, and, thanks to the powerful motor-pump combinations from Baumüller, also offers optimization of cycle time, repeatability, energy consumption, and environmental compatibility.

Baumüller's servo pump combines the advantages of hydraulic power transmission with the benefits of electric servo drive technology. Servo pump drives for the hydraulic supply consist of a fixed displacement pump driven by a servo motor. The flow rate and pressure can be controlled precisely by highly dynamic changing of the motor speed. Since the drive only generates output when the servo pump is actually used, the machine consumes far less energy. The energy-saving potential of Baumüller's servo hydraulics is therefore particularly evident during process pauses.

servopump efficiency pressThe high energy efficiency of the servo-hydraulic solution is achieved through demand-based pump output. When the press is at a standstill, e.g., during the dwell time, the motors are also at rest and consume no energy
