SPS – Smart Production Solutions: Baumüller presents drive-integrated b maXX drivePLC control unit for highly synchronous motion control and modular machine concepts
With the b maXX drivePLC, Baumüller is leveraging its many years of experience in the field of drive-integrated control units to develop a modern, open, and CRA-compliant automation platform. Control, motion control, and technology functions are executed directly within the servo drive in real-time controller cycles with cycle times down to 250 μs using the b maXX drivePLC. This creates highly synchronous processes with fast response times and high control accuracy. Running the application directly in the drive reduces communication overhead and takes the load off the fieldbus. The result is more precise motion sequences, higher machine output, and increased productivity.
The drive-integrated b maXX drivePLC control unit executes complex motion control, technology, and PLC functions directly inside the drive.
Easily implement modular machine concepts
The advantages of decentralized intelligence are particularly evident in modern machine and plant concepts. With the b maXX drivePLC, individual machine modules can be implemented as standalone, intelligent submodules. These can be developed, tested, and pre-commissioned independently before final assembly. This simplifies commissioning, shortens time-to-market, and saves time and money.
In addition, the platform enables the implementation of high-performance cluster solutions. As an EtherCAT Main Device, the b maXX drivePLC can coordinate additional drives and automation components, grouping them into intelligent drive and machine clusters. Functions are executed specifically where they are needed—directly within the respective machine module. This provides a high degree of scalability and opens up new possibilities for machine architecture. Thanks to various fieldbus interfaces and associated protocols, the b maXX drivePLC can be integrated flexibly with third-party control units.
Open, connected, and future-ready
With its open architecture, the b maXX drivePLC is ideally equipped for future requirements. The platform supports modern communication standards such as OPC UA, MQTT, EtherCAT, and Ethernet, integrating seamlessly into machines, production lines, and cloud-based systems. The Linux-based runtime system offers the flexibility required to implement customized applications and integrate additional software functions.
Another key focus is cybersecurity. The platform was developed in accordance with current industrial security requirements and assists machine builders in complying with Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) regulations. Baumüller is thus already setting the stage for long-term secure and compliant machine communication.
